Michael W. Cluck MD, PhD is a Board Certified Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon. He currently owns and practices at Bay Area Spine Care in San Jose, California. Dr. Cluck treats all aspects of spinal disease including degenerative and traumatic conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine-herniated disc disease, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and scoliosis, both children and adults. He has extensive training in cervical spine surgery including decompression and complex reconstruction for disorders such as cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy.
Dr. Cluck is an expert in minimally invasive spine surgery. He has extensive training in motion preservation surgery including artificial disc replacement. Dr. Cluck is actively involved in medical research and technology development.
Dr. Cluck takes an individual approach to patient care. He uses state-of-the-art technology to precisely diagnose the location of pain in each patient. Only then does he offer surgical and non-surgical treatment options to relieve pain and improve function. In fact, Dr. Cluck has a special interest in pain management and understands through better pain control patients are more comfortable and functional after surgery allowing them to regain better long term function in a more timely fashion.
Dr. Cluck was born and raised in Northern California. He attended the University of California Santa Barbara for his undergraduate education. He earned his MD/PhD at the Creighton University School of Medicine and graduated in the top of his class with several academic honors including Alpha Omega Alpha.
Dr. Cluck completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and was selected to attend the AOA Leadership Forum and the AAOS Clinical Scientist Development Program for displaying outstanding leadership skills and dedication toward clinical and basic science research. Dr. Cluck continued his education after residency in complex spine surgery at Case Western Reserve University with Henry Bohlman.
Dr. Cluck’s past academic and administravitve appointments include Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Clinical Instructor at the Good Samaritan Orthopaedic Residency Program where he educated medical students, Orthopaedic surgery residents, and spine surgery fellows. He currently serves as Chairman in the the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos and was Vice-Chariman of the department prior to that postion. Dr. Cluck has published numerous articles and book chapters in the scientific literature. He is involved in peer review of journal articles submitted for scientific publication. Dr. Cluck routinely educates surgeons from around the world in minimally invasive spine surgery techniques.
Dr. Cluck is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of the North American Spine Society, the Lumbar Spine Research Society, the Society of Lateral Access Surgeons,Santa Clara County Medical Association and the Califonia Orthopaedic Association.
